CREDENTIALS:
HOW IMPORTANT ARE CREDENTIALS IN POLYGRAPH TESTING?
The answer is obvious. No one would think of going to a physician who did not have proper credentials, training and experience. The same is true in any profession. Before engaging the services of a polygraph examiner, it is wise to find out about their training, credentials and experience. Ask how long they have been an examiner – Find out when and where they received their training - Ask how many polygraph examinations they have conducted, and how many of those tests actually addressed the same issue you need to have tested – Find out about which or how many professional polygraph associations they currently belong to – Ask if they have ever qualified as an expert polygraph witness in court – Of great importance is continuing education, find out how often they attend continuing education courses. (Examiners must attend a specified amount of hours annually to maintain proficiency. Those examiners who conduct sex offender testing require even higher standards.)
If the examiner is truly professional, they will know about their qualifications and should gladly provide you with this information on their web site or in writing. If this information is not readily available – ASK! The last thing you need is to spend money on a polygraph test that would be inaccurate or invalid. Test results that are inaccurate can cost you a lot more than your money. It can cost you your freedom, harm your defense, it can cost you your job, your relationship, your reputation. Always ask for credentials and experience. We at Mindsight Consultants have a commitment to accuracy.
Professional associations such as the American Polygraph Association (APA), the National Polygraph Association (NPA), the American Association of Police Polygraphists (AAPP) maintain high standards and require members to have extensive training at approved schools, along with continuing educational requirements to study the latest developments in technology and techniques relating to the field of forensic psychophysiology and the polygraph.
